One of my grandpa's favorites
Back in the late 20’s and into the 30’s, my grandfather worked in a book store in Chicago. It was the usual sort of job and there were tables for people to sit, read and have conversations. This was also peak prohibition times and the gangsters were well known to the shop workers in the area. As it happened, my grandfather’s store became a hangout for Al Capone’s hitmen. Grandpa always thought it was strange. He thought they would be drinking or playing poker or something like that. So he asked them why.
“Reading is a great way to kill time”
This is also the same person who, when my dad asked for my mom’s hand in marriage, responded “I assume you want the rest of her too?”
