The Italians and Germans were stuck at a stalemate, both in their trenches with sharpshooters ready to shoot whoever’s head pops up on both sides. Now, the Italian officers got an idea: What if they yelled German names? They’d have to stand at attention, thinking it was a superior officer on their side, giving the sharpshooters a target. And so they did.
“Hans!”
“Jawhol!”

Quickly both the German officers and men knew that it was not the officers calling them to attention, but the Italians. So they came to the same conclusion as the Italians : However, the Italians were not aware of them realizing what their strategies were, and fell victim to their own trick.
